Kumbha Mela
14 Janaury to 28 April 2010 - Main day for Kumbha Mela is 14 April 2010 on Baishakh

Kumbha Yoga takes places every 12 years when Jupiter is in Aquarius and it is also celebrated when Jupiter is in  other fixed signs (Taurus, Leo and Scorpio). The Kumbha Mela takes place at 4 major spiritual sites - Haridwar, Prayag ( Allahbad), Nasik and Ujjain where millions of pilgrims attend. Usually one of the Cities hosts the major one. The Main Kumbha known as Maha Kumbha takes place when Jupiter is in Taurus - the main city hosting this is Prayag where the three holy rivers of India converge. These rives are Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati. The other Kumbha Melas are known as Ardha or half Khumba.
Mela means a gathering. So Kumbha Mela is the gathering to celebrate  the Kumbha Yoga.
Kumbha means a pot but in this case it indicates the pot holding Amrita, the nectar of immortality which was found in the ocean of milk by the mutual effort of the Gods and the demons. Dhanvantri the god of Ayurveda brough this out.
For the celebration of  Kumbha to take place, there has to be a certain configuration of Jupiter, Sun and Moon.

Times of Celebration

Jupiter                       Sun                           Moon                           Main City Celebration
Aquarius                   Aries                          Sagittarius                   Haridwar
Taurus                      Capricorn                   Capricorn                     Prayag
Leo                           Cancer                        Cancer                         Nasik
Leo                           Leo                             Aries                            Ujjain
Scorpio                    Capricorn                   Capricorn                     Prayag

It is important to remember that all holy sites will celebrate the Kumbha Mela. Also there is an elaborate method of time to take the holy dip on new and full Moon and different times when the time is Pushkara. I have given the days of ritual bathing for 2010.
The belief is to bath during the time of the Purna Tithi (the main day of the Kumbha) will bring self realisation and freedom from the pains and sorrows of lfe and rebirth.
Even those who are unable to go to the Mela physically should tune into this sacred time and use it to cleanse the inner self of our pain and sorrow and let go of the toxins.

Mythology of the Kumbha

The myth of Kumbha is conncted to Sumadra Manthan or chirning of the Ocean of Milk. Many of you may be aware of this in connection with the birth of Rahu and Ketu. But in this myth, there is a slightly different angle. When Jupiter was in Capircorn, the gods lost their power and were misbehaving just like the Demonds. Moon has gone into the ocean and the nights of pure darkness was creating Tamas in al lcreatures. T oresolve this,  Brahma, the creator, advised the Gods to retrieve the Kumbha or the pot containing the nectar of immortality (amrit) from the oceans. Brihaspati( Jupiter) who is the advisor of the gods told them that this task was so great that they could only achieve success if they took the help of the Demons. So stage was set for this unusual collaboration. The gift at the end was of immortality and eternal happiness.

In the Himalayas, near Haridwar, there was the Ocean of milk and Devtas and the Asuras ( gods and demons) jointly churned the ocea.  Mandara mountain was the rod and the Snake Vasuki was the rope and Lord Vishnu took form of Kurma (tortoise) to become the base, in order to ensure the success of this mission.  During the manthan process, one by one Puspaka Ratha  (Aeroplane) , Airavat Elephant,  the goddess Laxmi etc and at last Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda came out with kumbha carrying the amrita . Dhanwantari handed over the Kumbha to Indra  who gave it to his son Jayanta. Instigated by the Gods, Jayanta ran way with the kumbha towards Swarga (heaven). The advisor of Demonds, Sukracharya (  Venus) ordered his disciples to get the Kumbha back as without that they will lose their power and the Gods will become all powerful again.
A great war broke out between Devta's and Asura's. The Devatas were chased by the Asuras for twelve days around the earth. At this time, the gods hid the nectar in four important pilgimage sites - Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. Since then, Kumbhamela is held at this four places to celebrate the rescue of the Amrita.  Since one day of Gods time is equillant of one year in Earth time, A Purna Kumbha takes place after every twelve years and an Ardha Kumbh after every six years. Since Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon) and Brihaspati were there to protect the kumbha during the battle, they must be in special configuration for Kumbha Yoga and its festivities to take place. .
This Myth can also be taken as an allegory to life, that the positive and negative forces within us are always fighting to gain control of our inner amrita, the nectar which can bring happiness, joy and eternal peace. In order to gain our inner peace we have to work with the negative karma of the past and come to terms with it. If our positive thought and ideas dominate, we are able to find that elusive happiness and transcend from the day to day pain and sorrow.
